Don’t I Get Some Credit???
The “flesh” hates a message that emphasizes God’s grace. Flesh likes to work, flesh likes to boast, and when a message that gives Jesus all of the credit is proclaimed, flesh doesn’t get any credit. But, flesh loves works based legalism. Loves it! The flesh loves to hear that it needs to work harder, that it needs to be crucified, that it needs to be more dedicated and sold out. Any message that makes us feel like we are contributing to our standing with God is a message that is appealing to our flesh. Paul spoke of this:
2 Timothy 4:3 – For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.
But, there is no room for boasting when the pure grace of God is presented. In legalism you can boast, but in true grace you can’t. Paul also spoke of this:
Romans 4:1-4 – What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt.
What are you boasting in? Your works or His finished work?
