Your Newborn Baby is Abominable to God – The Doctrine of Total Depravity

The doctrine of Total Depravity as defined by John Calvin is a totally depraved doctrine! Honestly, it’s just sick! This doctrine has to do with the nature of man. There are many different theological understandings and differences on the nature of man, but Total Depravity is the most common. Even MANY who don’t fully understand this doctrine are still heavily influenced by it and adhere to much of it. Even MANY still yet who would reject Calvin’s full understanding and definition(s) of this doctrine are still actually adhering to his doctrine of it; they just don’t know that it’s this doctrine that they are adhering to.

Calvin, it must be said, was brilliant, and Calvinism is an incredibly logical and well thought through systematic theology. Now, I disagree with Calvinism, BUT Calvinism is a very logical and consistent. If Christians who hold to pieces here and there of Calvinistic thoughts (unbeknownst to them) actually thought about what they are saying and believing in a logical manner and ran those thoughts through there full course then they too would come to Calvin’s conclusions. This would include the vast majority of the Western Evangelical Protestant church world.

All of that being said, below is a statement from Calvin on the Doctrine of Original Sin, aka Total Depravity. When we say that people are conceived and born totally corrupted by Adam’s sin and are therefore born totally enslaved to the “sin nature”, then below is the only logical conclusion of this doctrine once’s it’s fully considered and thought through:

“Hence, even infants bringing their condemnation with them from their mother’s womb, suffer not for another’s, but for their own defect. For although they have not yet produced the fruits of their own unrighteousness, they have the seed implanted in them. Nay, their whole nature is, as it were, a seed-bed of sin, and therefore cannot but be odious and abominable to God.”

Notice here that Calvin said that every born just seconds ago infant, the one that you love and hold in your arms for the very first time, “cannot be but odious and abominable to God.” You may think that that’s extreme and taking it a little far, but once again, if thought through fully and consistently then this is precisely the conclusion that we would come to as well if we hold to this doctrine of Original Sin or Total Depravity.

It’s time for the Church to realize just how much our Western Church thought and belief has been plagued by Augustine and Calvin, and make the necessary adjustments to get their leaven out of our theological makeup.
